Hack Your Heat Pump To Save Money $$$
Heat pumps are very efficent in the winter months compared to fuel oil, propane, or natural gas heaters. They do have one achilles heal though, an auxillary electric heat strip that pulls anywhere from 12,000-20,000 watts. This is to supplement the heat pump in times of extreme cold. The thermostat can also call upon this auxillary heat strip if the heat pump is taking a little longer to keep the house warm. By disabling this heat strip you can save a considerable amount of money on our electric bill.
A few precautions before you consider performing this basic hack. Heat pumps are effective until around 20'f, when the heat strip will be truly needed to supplement the heat pump. Failure to allow the thermostat to utilize the heat strip in sub 20'f weather can put too much strain on the heat pumps compressor.
This is an easy hack to do, but it also entails a certain amount of responsibility from the home owner to keep an eye on the weather forecast and turn on the switch in times when the temperature will dip below 20'f.
