🔬 Deep Dive: The Biochemistry of the Killer
1. The Architecture (The Look) 🧬
Hemoglobin is a masterpiece of protein folding (Quaternary Structure). It consists of four massive subunits (Globins) that are perfectly interlocked.
Two Alpha chains & two Beta chains.
Together, they form a complex globular shape that is flexible enough to slide through the narrowest capillaries.
2. The Core: The Heme Group 💎
Deep inside each of the four chains sits the "jewel": The Heme Group.
This is an organic ring (Porphyrin) with a single Iron atom (Fe^{2+}) right in the center.
This Iron is the magnet. It is the reason your blood is red.
This is where Oxygen (O_2) docks to be transported.
3. The Hijack: Competitive Inhibition ⚔️
The problem: The Iron in the Heme is not picky.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) looks chemically very similar to Oxygen, but it is much more aggressive.
The Physics: CO binds approx. 250 times stronger to the Iron than Oxygen!
The Effect: Once CO sits down, it permanently blocks the seat. The Hemoglobin taxi drives through the body "occupied," but no passenger can get in.
4. The Deceptive Symptom (Cherry Red) 🍒
Usually, oxygen-deprived blood turns dark blue/purple (Cyanosis).
But the complex of Hemoglobin and CO (Carboxyhemoglobin) has a bright, neon-red color.
The victim looks rosy and healthy while suffocating internally (Hypoxia).
