Is there a way to become a respected actor without acting school?
I wanted to take a tiny bit of time to clarify why working in production while pursuing acting is better than working a survival job that's outside the industry while doing the same thing.
First consider you are working a survival job outside the industry, retail, food service, any kind of office job, doesn't matter. In the meantime you are researching acting classes and coaches, you'll be making a website, uploading clips and headshots, and going to auditions.
Those are all good things, but you could be wasting a lot of energy without realizing it. If the main interaction you're having with the professional industry is the audition room, you're only interfacing with a small group of people.
If you want to succeed, you want a bigger network. So now consider if your survival job was working on set as part of production. You'll still be meeting people from casting and some directors, but you'll be meeting more of them than you would with the occasional audition.
You'll meet DPs, many of whom are future directors, who are looking for aspiring actors to put in their projects. This can get you more acting experience and possibly footage for your reel. You're building connections with the future of the industry.
You'll also be meeting working actors. I keep reminding people that all answers are found on set. If you build some relationships with actors, you'll learn who are the best coaches, agencies, management companies, and have an easier path to getting connected with those critical resources. You'll find out about acting groups and showcases as well which can help you get representation.
There's a lot to learn about the industry and the best place to do that is inside it. You can make great money in production, $650 a day being standard on union sets and above $150 a day on lower budget professional shoots.
The network you build in many ways is your career, so you have to get on set.
