Jordan: Syrian women in distress - Reporters

Three years after the start of the conflict, hundreds of thousands of Syrians have found refuge in Jordan. But for women, life in the refugee camps can turn into a living hell. Some are forced to marry rich foreigners while others are made to work as prostitutes. Our reporter investigates.

Gender-based violence in the Syrian refugee community is an extremely difficult issue to tackle. It took many phone calls, emails and meetings to get people to agree to help us find humanitarian workers, victims and others willing to contribute to this story.

For fear of retribution, victims are reluctant to speak out, particularly in front of a TV camera.

Humanitarian workers want to shed light on the plight of these women but they are sceptical about the kind of coverage the issue has received so far.

In the end, if it had not been for the Jordanian Women's Union and their staff, this story might not have been possible. They took up the challenge of highlighting these growing problems but were also adamant about safeguarding the identity of the victims.

This report was entirely shot in Jordan, sometimes undercover.
