The focal point of lively Galata is the 14th-century Galata Tower, which has expansive views of the Bosphorus from its balcony. Below, the area's narrow streets are home to chic bars, old-school restaurants, and small shops that sell odds and ends. Centuries-old synagogues, churches, and mosques dot the neighborhood, while the Galata Mevlevi House museum and cultural center have performances by whirling dervishes.
The Galata Tower, called Christea Turris by the Genoese, is a medieval stone tower in the Galata/Karaköy quarter of Istanbul, Turkey, just to the north of the Golden Horn's junction with the Bosphorus.
