The 1928 Origins: The sport began informally at the Cowboy Reunion Rodeo in Stamford, Texas.

The Original Pattern: Early races used just two barrels in a figure-eight pattern. It was initially judged on a mix of speed, elegance, and the rider's style.

The Cloverleaf Shift: By 1935, a third barrel was added, establishing the cloverleaf pattern. The criteria shifted purely to speed and precision against an electric timer. A knocked-over barrel resulted in a stiff 5-second penalty.

4. The GRA and the Fight for Equality: 1948–1980s.

Frustrated by unfair payouts and a lack of opportunities, a group of Texas ranch women took matters into their own hands.

The Historic Meeting: On February 28, 1948, 38 cowgirls met in San Angelo, Texas, to form the Girls Rodeo Association (GRA). It was the first professional sports organization created by women, for women.

The Name Change: In 1981, the GRA officially renamed itself the Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA).

The Equal Pay Ultimatum: In 1980, the WPRA board made a legendary stand, declaring they would refuse to sanction any Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rodeo by 1985 unless the women's barrel racing purse equaled the men’s events.
