The Turing Lectures: with Rene Vidal

Introduction
René Vidal is a 2021 Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award winner, for "pioneering contributions to subspace clustering and generalized principal component analysis with applications in computer vision and pattern recognition.”

This is a technical talk, suitable for researchers in the field.

About the event
Developments in machine learning mean that researchers now have access to a range of automatic methods for interpreting biomedical data, helping healthcare professionals to better diagnose, treat and monitor their patients.

In this lecture, biomedical engineer René Vidal will take us through his work at the forefront of this area, introducing applications ranging from the microscopic to the macroscopic.

At the cellular scale, he will present research including a convolutional dictionary learning method for detecting and counting blood cells in holographic images, and a structured matrix factorisation method for segmenting neurons and finding their spiking patterns in calcium imaging videos. At the organ scale, he will introduce a sparse representation method for accelerating diffusion MRI reconstruction. And at the patient scale, he will present dynamical system and machine learning methods for recognising surgical gestures and assessing surgical skill in medical robotic motion and video data, and for assessing the effectiveness of therapy in children with developmental and motor deficits.
