Poplar Bluff, Missouri - May 9th, 1927 Tornado

On May 9, 1927, one of the deadliest tornadoes in Missouri history tore through our community, destroying homes, businesses, churches, schools, and countless lives in only moments.

Earlier this year, we released a short historical visualization remembering the Poplar Bluff tornado of 1927. As the 99th anniversary approaches this weekend, we’ve prepared an expanded Memorial Edition of the project featuring additional scenes, restored imagery, and new historical visualizations alongside the original sequences.

This video was created as a respectful memorial-style reflection using historic photographs, postcards, newspaper accounts, and known downtown locations to help visualize the impact the storm had on Poplar Bluff and the people who lived through it.

Most importantly, this project is intended to remember the 86 lives lost and the many families forever changed by the tornado.

If your family has stories, photographs, newspaper clippings, or memories connected to the 1927 tornado, we would be honored to help preserve them as part of our shared local history.
