Hualien, Taiwan — Taroko, Pine Garden, Ji-An Shrine, Chongqing Market, and the best Sushi

48 hours in Hualien and experiencing Taiwan’s best sushi.

I have dined at some of the best sushi restaurants in Taipei, including 笹鮨 SASA, Yóu Sushi, and Kitcho.

Midnight Sushi 花蓮•深夜食堂 in Hualien gets my vote as the best sushi in Taiwan — an 8-seater restaurant that is known throughout Taiwain — it is the dining concept of chef, Zong-Ru 楊宗儒.
The son of a Japanese father, Zong-Ru 楊宗儒 says his sushi is crafted from his heart and that he is most happy to see his customers smile when eating his creations.
He sources his ingredients locally, and from Japan — he flies seasonal fish to Hualien overnight from Japan. He says the best tuna though, is from Taitung.

Pine Garden
In 1942, Pine Garden served as a command center during the Japanese Colonial Era.
Its charm feels like Japan.

From Pine Garden, kamikazes (神風特攻隊) took off for suicide missions — the evening of their mission, the pilots received a glass of emperors wine.
It’s strategic location allowed the Japanese to command their battleships and fighter aircrafts without any difficulty.

In 1945 — After World War II — Pine Garden was turned into a vacation resort operated by the U.S. Army.

Today, Pine Garden is a cultural hub dedicated to poetry.

It is the highest point of Hualien, overlooking Hualien Harbor,
if anything it is a great place to see the Pacific Ocean view and take photos.
