Telling the Time in Russian (Analogue) - Russian Lessons

Learn to tell the time in Russian with this simple video. In Russian there are two methods for telling time. The first correlates to the use of an analogue clock. The second method is to use 24-hour time. The first method is common among friends, whereas 24-hour time is used in more formal situations. We will look at the analogue clock method in this video. It is the more complicated of the two methods. As you watch the video practice reading each video out loud.

As you can see from the video telling the time on the hour is pretty easy. Use the cardinal number followed by час/часа/часов. For an explaination of these word ending refer to our plurals lesson : http://www.russianlessons.net/lessons/lesson11_main.php
Things become more interesting between the hours. Remember that from 3 : 01 the fourth hour of the day has begun. (There have already been 3 full hours since midnight, this hour is the fourth).

From 3 : 01 to 3 : 29 we say how many minutes we are into the fourth hour. пятнадцать минут четвертого (fifteen minutes into the fourth hour).

At 3 : 30 we say: “Half of the fourth hour.”: половина четвертого

From 3 : 31 - 3 : 59 we say that it is four, without a certain number of minutes. без пятнадцати четыре. (without fifteen – four)

In summary:

3 : 00 -  три часа
3 : 15 - пятнадцать минут четвертого
3 : 30 - половина четвертого
3 : 45 - без пятнадцати четыре
4 : 00 – четыре часа
