About this original version of Roberto Alagna's interpretation:

❝We’ve chosen to open my album 'Caruso 1873' with something unexpected: Lucio Dalla’s Caruso. This is really a pop song, in terms of its arrangement, structure, development and colour, so we had to think about how we could add it to our tracklist without changing the whole character of the album, without it clashing with the overall tone of an album which, even if we hadn’t artificially “aged” it, was meant to sound as it would have done in Caruso’s day. I thought about it long and hard. Dalla was inspired to write his tribute by a visit to the room in which Caruso died at the Vesuvio Hotel. But what’s less well known is that he also drew on Dicitencello vuie, a song Caruso never sang as it was written ten years after his death, and from whose lyrics Dalla made a number of direct borrowings for his own song (“Te voglio bene assaje”, “Una catena”, etc.) – the same words and almost the same tune. I decided to combine the two and create a piece that’s more operatic in feel. The tonalities are completely modified, and there are even several key changes during the course of the song, giving it a classical air while leaving it with its own identity intact. What Yvan Cassar and I tried to create was a version that could have been sung by Caruso himself. I’m delighted that we turned the idea into reality and that we’ve produced a completely original version of the song.❞ Roberto Alagna

A propos de cette version originale de la chanson de Dalla interprétée par Roberto Alagna:

❝C’est une chanson d’aujourd’hui qui, en guise de surprise, introduit mon disque 'Caruso 1873' : celle de Lucio Dalla, « Caruso ». Il s’agit vraiment d’une chanson pop, avec son arrangement, sa structure, son développement et sa couleur. Comment faire pour intégrer harmonieusement cet air sans dénaturer le disque ? Comment l’insérer sans qu’il soit étranger à la couleur d’ensemble d’un CD qui, même si nous n’avons pas vieilli les sonorités artificiellement, était destiné à sonner comme au temps de Caruso ? J’ai mûrement réfléchi. Pour composer sa chanson hommage, Lucio Dalla avait été inspiré par la chambre d’hôtel où Caruso était décédé à l’hôtel Vesuvio. Mais ce que l’on sait moins est qu’il s’est aussi inspiré d’une autre chanson, « Dicitencello Vuie », que Caruso n’a pas chantée puisque composée 10 ans après sa mort. Certains passages de la chanson, « Te voglio bene assaje », « Una catena », etc. sont directement inspirés du refrain de cette autre chanson. Ce sont les mêmes mots et quasiment la même mélodie. J’ai décidé de mélanger les deux, en recherchant une couleur beaucoup plus lyrique. Les tonalités sont complètement modifiées, et même changent plusieurs fois au fil de la chanson, ce qui lui donne une teinte classique tout en préservant son identité. Ce que j’ai essayé de créer avec Yvan Cassar, c’est une version qui aurait pu être chantée par Enrico Caruso lui-même. Je suis heureux que nous soyons parvenus à la concrétiser et je pense que nous tenons une version complètement inédite.❞ Roberto Alagna
