What is a Claude skill?
A skill is a markdown file that teaches Claude how to perform a specific task. It includes the steps, the reasoning, the tools to use, and the output format, so you get a consistent result every time you run it.

How do you find skills in Claude?
Type a forward slash in any chat to see your available skills, or go to Customize, then Skills, in the Claude web app or desktop app. That's where you upload, edit, download, or create new ones.

How do you run a skill in Claude?
Use the slash command to pick the skill you want, then describe what you need. Claude reads the skill files first, then follows the steps inside. You can also let Claude pick a skill automatically based on your request, but the slash command guarantees it uses the one you want.

How do you upload a Claude skill?
Go to Customize, click the plus icon, hit Upload, and drop in the skill file. If the formatting is off, paste the file into a Claude chat and ask Claude to fix it into a working skill.

How do you create your own Claude skill?
Use the built-in skill creator. Start a chat, pull up the skill creator skill, and tell Claude what you want the skill to do. It asks questions, drafts a first version, and lets you test and refine until the output is what you want.

Why use skills instead of regular prompts?
Skills are reusable, consistent, and can call tools like the Ahrefs MCP. They turn a one-off prompt into a repeatable process you can hand off to teammates or clients. They're also industry standard, so the same skill works in Claude, Claude Code, OpenClaw, Hermes, and most other AI harnesses.
