Stereotypes of Italy, North & South

In this lighthearted video, see how two different Italian perspectives – Dario from the Sicily in the Southern Italy and Monica from Turin in the North of Italy – show very different attitudes towards Italy’s everyday life. Italian stereotypes range from a bit of joking to passionate fights.
Monica explains how the presence of the noble Savoy Family, along with the constant threat of invasions from Germany, France, and other European countries led to a very conservative and guarded personality. Nobility also created a sense of elegance and formality. She also shares how a strong industrial culture (Fiat’s factories) influenced timing including earlier dinner times, plus the rhythm and commitment to being on time that was ingrained due to having shifts at the factory.
This is in contrast with Dario’s Sicilian life in the south of Italy where there is more openness and warmth in casual relationships. This creates larger family gatherings where extended family and friends are all welcome and the food is abundant to ensure that everyone gets more than enough. Dario also talks about what it means to be on time in Sicily, a stark contrast to the northern way.
See how all of these different influences can create confusion and misunderstandings between the North and the South in Italy.
