How to Spool 3D Printing Filament on Metal Spools - Dry your materials safely!
Today, we're showing how we spool filament onto our metal 3D printing filament spools. The reason we created a metal spool is to allow users to dry high temp filaments at temperatures of up to 150°C to properly remove excess moisture, especially from high-performance polymers like PEEK, PEKK, ULTEM, PSU, PPSU, and Nylon or Polycarbonate.
For this you will need your spool of filament, an empty spool, a drill, the 3D printable spool drill holder, a glove, and something to hold the other spool, such as a long screwdriver or a dowel.

There're several spots to secure filament to the metal spool but our favorite technique is to create a little hook with the end of the filament and place it on the hole in the center of the spool. Using the screwdriver, hold the full spool up and slowly start the drill. After a few rotations, you can increase the speed, using your other hand to slowly guide the filament onto the metal spool. Towards the end of the process, start slowing down the drill speed. Secure the end of the filament onto one of the slots and you’ve successfully added filament to a spool.
At Vision Miner, we specialize in Functional 3D printing, especially high-performance plastics like PEEK, ULTEM, PPSU, PPS, CFPA, and more. If you're interested in using functional 3D printing and materials in your business, feel free to reach out, and we can help you make the right choice for your application.
