Bach - Magnificat - Freut euch und jubiliert
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750):
MAGNIFICAT (BWV 243a)
Bach's Magnificat is a musical setting of the biblical canticle Magnificat. It is scored for five vocal parts (two sopranos, alto, tenor and bass), and a Baroque orchestra including trumpets and timpani.
Bach composed his first version of the Magnificat in 1723 for the Christmas service in Leipzig (his first Christmas there). This work is in E flat major. According to an old Leipzig Christmas custom, the Magnificat text was interpolated with 4 "lauds" (hymns in Latin and German), and Bach sets the same 4 texts (and in the same order) as his predecessor as Thomaskantor in Leipzig (Johann Kuhnau) had done.
The second laud "B" is an anonymous text derived from Luke 2:10 "Freut euch und jubiliert". It is polyphonic with an independent basso continuo. It is sung after the fifth movement of the Magnificat text "Quia fecit mihi magna".
Bach later revised his Magnificat: it was transposed to D major, the 4 lauds were removed, and various other adjustments were made. This version (BWV 243) is today the more well-known of the two.
Freut euch und jubiliert,
Zu Bethlehem gefunden wird
Das herzeliebe Jesulein,
Das soll euer Freud und Wonne sein.
(after Luke 2:10)
Rejoice with triumph glad,
In Bethlehem revealed hath been
The darling little Jesus-child,
That shall to you joy and pleasure bring.
