10 Ultimate Military Dogs In The World
Dogs aren’t just pets and companions. Some dog breeds actually hold real jobs. Some are therapy dogs,
some even guide blind people around. But their most popular job to this day is in law enforcement and
the military, and those are the dog breeds that we will look at today. From a military dog with a shady
past, to the standard bearer for all military breeds, here are the 10 ultimate military dogs in the world.

Number 10. The Black Russian Terrier
The Black Russian terrier is the youngest breed on this list. Despite that, it’s also the breed that
probably has the deepest and richest history, mostly because of its murky origins. But as they were bred
at the former Soviet Army’s Red Star Kennel, it isn’t all that surprising.
This large, shaggy, and strong breed was specifically bred for military use, mainly as guard dogs. They
were the results of careful crossbreeding of dog breeds that were particularly used in wars like giant
Schnauzer, Airedale terrier, and the Rottweiler, among others, having 17 to 20 dog breeds in their
bloodline. It’s exact lineage, however, is a complete unknown. This is due to the breed’s military origins
and limited access to classified information during and after the breed’s very complex development over
a period of years.
Possessing unbelievable stamina, Black Russian Terriers are suitable for working in stressful and harsh
conditions. They are currently used as patrol dogs, for guarding military bases, sentry dogs, detection
dogs, and even search and rescue dogs.

Number 9. The Bouvier Des Flandres
The Bouvier des Flandres, sometimes just called Bouvier, is a large and powerful herding dog, with a
tousled harsh coat. This ruggedly handsome dog was first bred for herding and driving cattle in Flanders,
an area that used to cover parts of Belgium.
When Flanders became a literal battleground during the first world war, and Bouviers were drafted into
the army to do a whole new line of work—carrying messages to and from the battlefield and pulling
ambulance litters. Many dogs were lost during the skirmishes, so much so that the breed nearly went
extinct. Thankfully, a few dedicated people saved the Bouvier when they brought dogs to France and the
Netherlands. The breed was also introduced to North America in the late 1920s. However, they proved
themselves so indispensable in the battle field, these brave dogs were again drafted during world war II,
and again, they nearly went extinct.
Bouviers are still on the job today, although they don’t have to risk their lives that much. You might find
them working a farm in many of the traditional ways, or various other positions such as police dogs,
search and rescue dogs, military dogs, or guide dogs for the hearing impaired or the visually impaired.

Number 8. The Giant Schnauzer

The giant schnauzer, also called the “riesenschnauzer” in German, is a multi-talented pure breed that is
excellent at a variety of jobs including guarding, police work, tracking, and military work. They are even a
popular breed for obedience competitions. They were originally bred for hunting and taking down
moose but have also been used by European law enforcement agencies in Spain and Hungary for nearly
100 years. And in the second world war, the German military used them as tracking and sentry dogs.
Smart, loyal, and protective, this alert breed will bark to let you know of any intruders. And because of
that protective instinct, it will also zealously guard and defend you and the family. However, because of
its potential for aggression and its stubborn nature this is not the best dog for new owners.
All in all, it’s a very quiet dog with a hidden playful nature. While some can be more serious and
reserved, others are more outgoing and sweet. It is territorial and is wary around strangers, even
suspicious. If not well socialized and trained that suspicion can be more likely to lead to snapping and
aggression.

Number 7. The Labrador Retriever
We tend to think of Labrador retrievers as playful and loyal family dogs. That’s because they are, but
there’s more to them than that. much, much more. This breed, popular for playing the role of O’l Yeller,
actually fought alongside the US Armed Forces in many deployments.
While German Shepherds undoubtedly favored to become scout dogs, Labs were better as tracker dogs
after the successful experience of the British. They were great tempered, tolerated the heat fairly well,
and were excellent at picking up dead scents off the ground. They alert their handlers of find in
extremely understandable gestures as well; a tail wag, an ear twitch, a head tilt or even by simply
stopping.
