Shocking Survival Hack! : 'Chewing Gum Magic' For Beginners

This is a truly super hot and somewhat shocking survival hack for beginners in need of near-instant fire! The lights have gone out, the cost of fuel is rocketing and it's cold outside!... waddaya do... you reach for a candle, cotton wool, your chewing gum and a battery!... and hey presto!... you're back in business!

Simply using the 'heating effect of a current' in a chewing gum wrapper and a single cell, you can raise the temperature sufficiently to ignite cotton wool and then the wick of a candle placed near it!

Step 1 - Remove the foil wrapper from a stick of chewing gum
Step 2 - Cut along the length of the wrapper to create a 1.5cm thick section
Step 3 - Make 2, 1.2cm vertical cuts perpendicular to the length of the wrapper 2mm from the middle from each end to create a little thin bridge of foiled paper.
Step 4. Gently wrap 1 ball of cotton reasonably tightly around the exposed wick of a candle
Step 5. Carefully hold with one finger, the foil side of one end of the wrapper on one end of the cell
Step 6. Bringing the cell and the little bridged foil section close to the wool, connect the other end of the foiled face of the wrapper to the other end of the cell whilst it touches the wool.
Step 7. This foil hack should catch fire and set light to the wool!....and then the wick!

Safety precautions: Observe safety measures when working with an open flame and hot objects.
Explanation:

Whenever a current or electricity flows through a conductor the temperature rises. This is called the heating effect of a current. (you may have seen this in your GCSE Science or High School physics classes) If the heat created by this current gets too hot then the material through which the current flows might heat up sufficiently to catch fire in contact with the air around it.

In the case of our chewing gum wrapper hack or trick, DIY project or shocking survival hack for beginners, call it what you will, it's the Aluminium wrapper that conducts the electricity from the cell and at the little junction created by the tear, the resistance to the current is great emough to cause the Al to heat up and catch fire.

There isnt enough heat here in this useful electric DIY survival project at this point to light the wick, but there is enough to light some cotton wool... and this in turn lights the candle!
