How To Overcome A Layoff

In your corporate career you will either be impacted by or know someone who will be laid off. Many people provide ideas and ways to tactically deal with how to find a new job. In this video, we will focus on the internal frustration of being laid off and best practices to deal with it.

Give time for emotion- The moment you find out you are being laid off, it will push your emotions to the limit. Allow yourself to have space to be upset. Make sure you channel your energy into something that does not hurt you or others around you.
Anchor your mind in the truth- Being laid off is more stress internally. At your core you will feel rejected and that may play out in a lot of ways. But keep in mind this is NOT about you, it's just business. For managers and leaders, laying people off is not about likes and dislikes. Remember to also invest time into your spiritual practices as well.
This will be a long process- Because this is a forced change, you will have to deal with the timing of this. Things may not go as fast as you would like. You will also have to accept the fact that you may get a lot of declines for positions that you apply for. Just remember #2.
Be open to change- While you may post for jobs that utilize your current skills, the process of being laid off may take a long time. Which means you will have to be open to taking jobs that may be a bit uncomfortable in the meantime.
Write down contacts who can recommend you- Now that you have processed the internal part, the first thing you should do is think of who can speak for your skills that you know.
Ask for help- Do not wait until it's too late to ask for help. Try and ask for help early in the process so that you give the people who care about you time to see what they can come up with in their spheres of influence.
