Next generation sequencing used to be slow and expensive; Ion Torrent changed that in December 2010 when it launched the Ion Personal Genome Machine™ sequencer. The Ion PGM™ married simple sequencing chemistry with semi-conductor technology. Its Watson meets Moore.

The result is a sequencer that lets you do a run in about 2 hours. Throughput is 10Mb to 1Gb; with read-lengths from 100 to 200 base pairs, and increasing to 400 in 2012. Best of all it's about a tenth the cost of most next-generation sequencers to buy and to run.

It's simple because basically you just put your sample in and walk away. We've combined loading, clonal amplification, and sample recovery into a single, automated, hands-off process. Ion OneTouch™ is also fast. The total time is under 3 hours. Best of all it requires just 5 minutes of hands on time; far faster than current methods.

- Do some email
- And then sequence your samples before lunch

After that you can load up the Ion OneTouch™ again and go to a meeting, or do whatever else you need to get done in your day.

Finally, the Ion OneTouch™ is affordable. The running costs are comparable to using Ion manual kits and the introductory price for the Ion OneTouch™ is less than $5,000.

Here's how the Ion OneTouch™ works:
- Take a micro centrifuge tube filled with library and amplification pre-mix
- Connect the tube to the amplification disposable
- Insert into the Ion OneTouch™ instrument
- Press "Go" and walk away

3 hours later you just add polymerase and sequencing primer, load your sample on the chip and into the Ion PGM™ sequencer

Total time, under 3 hours -- with just minutes of hands on time.
