2. Pneumonia is an airspace disease and causes consolidation in chest x-ray.
… what is consolidation? What is airspace disease?
CONCEPTUAL KNOWLEDGE:
1. Type of Pneumonia - viral vs. bacterial - are different precautions needed?
2. Sign & Symptoms - cough, fever - what color is the sputum? what is expected?
3. Labs & Diagnostics - sputum, chest x-ray - how do you know it's pneumonia?
The x-ray findings of pneumonia are airspace opacity, lobar consolidation, or interstitial opacities. Pneumonia is a space occupying disease without volume loss.
... is it lobular, interstitial, aspiration or diffuse pneumonia?
PROCEDURAL KNOWLEDGE:
1. Check respiratory status, is oxygen needed? - why is this important?
2. Are antitussives/expectorants needed? - why are these products necessary?
3. Elevate head of bed, high or semi fowlers - why is this effective?
4. Encourage coughing - why is this important?
5. Increase fluid intake - why is this important?
... what treats this disease? Medicine, antibiotics? - why are these products necessary?
... what will the drug side effects be? What should I look out for?
