Big Problems Overlanding Colombia - Everlanders see the World!
With just over 3 weeks left on our Visas, we decided to drive to El Cocuy National Park in the Andes Mountains on the border of Colombia and Venezuela. There we intended to meet up with our friends Ulf and Berna, hike to some glaciers, and have a great time.
But the morning after we arrive our steed of an Inverter finally let out the magic smoke. Being that we are 100% solar powered for our cooking, this was a big blow. Getting anything shipped to us while on the move is very problematic. Import Taxes are often crazy and having no fixed address makes it hard.
I needed to make the judgment call to order parts to repair, or order a new Inverter. Both options would be tight for our timeline to get out of Colombia before our Visas expire. I decided to order parts, delivered in a week, but was unable to get it working. Now with only two weeks left, I needed to order a new Inverter... 4 week lead time.
We hiked glaciers and drove beautiful mountain roads, bla bla bla... But we still had to get out of the country. Then we fell in a hole, Then Ulf's truck lost power and needed to be towed up steep dirt roads.
Then our truck lost throttle control... No spare parts are available in South America, so I 3D print a geartrain to hack a potentiometer in place. 1 week left...
Finally, we make it to Bogata, get Ulf's truck to a mechanic, found a chowdered turbo, got new water filters, electronic parts, suspension research, and our new Inverter, then 20 hours south to the border of Ecuador where we exit on the last day of our Visa.
