Our initial route was closed, so we hopped on US285 into Bailey Colorado, and then Interstate 25, bringing us into Cheyenne, Wyoming! Sturgis Rally History
The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is a motorcycle rally held annually in Sturgis, South Dakota, and the surrounding Black Hills region of the United States. It began in 1938 by a group of Indian Motorcycle riders and was originally held for stunts and races. Attendance has historically been around 500,000 people, reaching a high of over 700,000 in 2015. The event takes place over 10 days and generates around $800 million in annual revenue.

The Sturgis Rally has been held every year, with exceptions during World War II. For instance, from 1942 to 1944, the event was not held due to gasoline rationing.
Originally the rally was a two-day event.
To serve the needs of future rally attendees, the Buffalo Chip Campground was established outside of town. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally venue first hosted campers in 1982. Over the years, the venue evolved to include vendors, campsites, cabins and stages, becoming one of the biggest entertainment hubs of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
For many years, the rally was a seven-day event starting on a Monday during the first full week of August.

Durango, Colorado
Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
Durango is known worldwide for the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a heritage railroad that operates what was the Denver & Rio Grande Western's Branchline to the historic mining town of Silverton, Colorado, also still notably using historic D&RGW Steam Locomotives and other historic rail equipment.
The turn of the century was the beginning of the tourist economy as travelers began to discover Durango and the Animas Valley as a vacation destination. In addition to interest in the Silverton Branch and the scenery of the area, the creation of Mesa Verde National Park in 1906 greatly increased travel to Durango.
Today, Durango is a haven to outdoor enthusiasts. Hunting, biking-- both mountain and road, hiking, fishing, skiing, rock climbing, and snowmobiling entice exuberant visitors to the Durango area year after year.

The Strater Hotel
Built in 1887, the historic Strater Hotel (Historic Hotel of America Founding Member) is one of the West's iconic hotels and a prominent downtown Durango, Colorado landmark located two blocks north of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, one hour from Mesa Verde National Park, several hours from the Four Corners Monument, and deep in the heart of the rugged San Juan Mountains and the San Juan Scenic Skyway.

Beartooth Highway
The Beartooth Highway is an All-American Road on a section of U.S. Route 212 in Montana and Wyoming between Red Lodge and the Northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park, passing over the Beartooth Pass in Wyoming at 10,947 feet above sea level.

Elevation Beer Company
Elevation Beer Co. is an artisan microbrewery located in Poncha Springs, Colorado just outside Salida specializing in adventurous seasonal barrel-aged beers for the craft beer fanatic.

Cheyenne, Wyoming
The City of Cheyenne had its beginning in 1867, when the Union Pacific Railroad came through on its way to the west coast. The town site was first surveyed by General Grenville Dodge and was named for an Indian tribe that roamed the area (originally called ‘Shey’ an’ nah’, belonging to the tribe of Alogonquian, the largest family of Indians on the North American Continent). Settlement came so fast that the nickname "Magic City of the Plains" was adopted.
