SSDs Make Serato Run Smoother... right?

This video, I give you one reason why DJs should NOT buy an SSD, and two reasons they should buy an SSD. In this desciption, I give you a couple more reasons that I didn't think about while filming this.

Disclaimer: if you are a DJ that plays video, you will need an SSD. You need that fast transfer speed and that fast search. Video files are a whole different game from what I’m talking about in this video.

I was experiencing choppy playback and waveform animation on one of my fellow DJs laptops. He has an i7, his operating system is on an NVME SSD. So I told him that I had heard that putting your library on an external ssd should help. He has USB 3.0. It ought to benefit him greatly. However, it did not. So I bought a Samsung T5 to test it for myself. Turns out that USB 2.0 speeds are plenty for Serato, and a HDD is much faster than USB 2.0. Spending money on an SSD is completely unnecessary.

Turns out my fellow DJ's problem was caused by two things. Cooling his laptop, and a setting in Serato that I will cover in an upcoming video.

Also, here is a third reason. Something that was super obvious that I forgot to mention in this video, the transfer speed of files. To fill this SSD up with music, I took both of my HDDs and pulled files from each of them at the same time, copying onto the Samsung T5 SSD. During this transfer the SSD wasn't even maxed out. However, both hard drives were maxed out at 120 MB/s. Something to think about is, if you have all your music loaded onto an SSD, you can copy files from this SSD onto multiple HDDs fast. If I were to go the other direction, copying files from the SSD onto HDDs, I could max out FOUR HDDs without the SSD breaking a sweat. FOUR! Possibly even five before you see significant speed drop. If you have a multi-op DJ company, you know how valuable this is. Every DJ coming into the office has TWO HDDs that they need updated. At the beginning of every month we've got 21 DJs coming in for their update. That's 42 HDDs that need an update the first week of every month.

This is a great SSD, but there are alot of other equally great SSDs that cost far less. In conclusion, please buy an SSD, but don't spend more that $250 on 2TB. The Samsung T5 2TB goes on sale for $250 all the time. Don't spend $300 like I did.
