To pressurize the tube, a high pressure pump or bicycle pump is attached to the car tyre valve. This pushes the piston up against the barrel (piston function is to seal the barrel at the time of air filling), preventing any of the air from escaping. The piston doesn’t make a perfect seal agaist brass tube (piston can easily slide forward and backwards), so air leaks around it and pressurizes the main brass tube. The car tyre valve also prevents the air from leaking out of the pen body. When the car tyre valve stem is pressed, the air escapes, the sudden pressure imbalance causes the piston to shoot backwards(at the time of filling air the piston will be pressed against the barrel), opening up a path for the air to escape through the barrel. This escaping air propels the projectile.
