WE FOUND A FORGOTTEN WORLD WAR 2 LOVE STORY

It's not secret that we find some amazing treasures in the historic homes we restore, but this one takes the cake even for us. Once upon a time a young Arkansas woman fell in love; not an unusual story. But this young woman's love was an Avenger Pilot in WW2, and that Avenger pilot was part of a mission that sunk one of the most dangerous destroyers in the Japanese fleet, the Yamoto.

Through out the war Ensign Clifford Laverne Fluitt flew multiple successful missions off of the carrier Bataan. During the war he proposed to his sweetheart Marjorie Mae Ingram, a classically trained pianist who graduated high school at 16, and received the first of two Bachelors degrees in 1941. She went on to study music at the Cincinnati Conservatory of music, but with the war intensifying she returned to Arkansas to participate in war efforts there. She and Ensign Fluitt were engaged, and eventually set their wedding date for September 1, 1945.

On July 15 1945 Ensign Fluitt set out for a bombing mission, and he along with his entire squadron went missing in action. His remains were never recovered, and he is memorialized on the WW2 memorial at Pearl Harbor.
Ensign Fluitt received the Navy Cross, Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Medal among other numerous awards.

Marjorie Mae went on to receive a second Bachelors Degree from the University of Arkansas in Music. She spent decades as one of the most well respected music educators in the state. In 1952 she married Elza Clifton Bond Jr, who himself was a well respected attorney and Judge for many decades. The two were integral members of their community and loved by all who knew them. They were married for 62 years.

This story shows one of many reasons that saving these historic homes is so important. These homes hold the stories and lives of all who have found shelter in their walls.
