10 Isolated Communities in New York Completely Cut Off From the Modern World

New York State contains the most connected city on Earth and some of the most isolated communities east of the Mississippi. This video visits ten of them — from a dead-end valley in the Catskills where a single fallen tree can seal the hamlet off from the world, to the largest Swartzentruber Amish settlement in the state, where families near the Canadian border live without electricity, indoor plumbing, or windshields on their buggies, and have done so by choice for fifty years.

Along the way we visit Fire Island's car-free communities, an island that belongs to New York but can only be reached from Connecticut, a hamlet in the Adirondacks where the mail is delivered by boat, the county seat of the emptiest county east of the Mississippi, and the largest Old Order Amish community in the United States. The entries are Oliverea, Fire Island, Fishers Island, Raquette Lake, Colton, Conewango Valley, Arietta, Indian Lake, Blue Mountain Lake, and Heuvelton.
