When did time begin?

According to modern cosmology, time itself began with the Big Bang.

This means the universe did not explode into empty space. Space was created in that moment. Time began to flow in that moment. There was no earlier moment waiting before it. There was no background clock. There was no container called space.

The Big Bang was not an explosion at a point in space. It was the expansion of space itself.

About 13.8 billion years ago, the universe emerged from an extremely hot and dense state. In a fraction of a second, space began expanding in all directions. The laws of physics took shape. Energy condensed into matter. Time started to exist.

Asking what happened before the Big Bang is like asking what is north of the North Pole. The question assumes a direction that does not exist.

When we observe distant galaxies, we are looking back in time. Their light has been traveling for billions of years. Some of it began its journey when the universe was only a few percent of its current age.

Every second that has ever passed traces back to that first moment.

And on one small planet around one ordinary star, intelligent life eventually evolved and began asking how the universe itself began.
