Bear with Caribou Carcass 2018a

TWT-G Video
1 of 4 videos

Grizzly bear feeding on a caribou carcass west of the Toklat River beside a small stream/Denali National Park/Interior Alaska/Summer 2018

This is the first of four, short videos of this event; in videos three and four, the breeding pair from the Riley Creek West family group come into investigate the scene.

This particular site was probably at least 1/4 mile south of the park road, consequently the video quality is degraded due to the digital magnification. This also impacts the steadiness of the video as it is being hand held; driver/naturalists do not carry tripods with them plus there is no room for a tripod.

In this type of situation, NPS will close down the area to all human entry until all of the activity is finished. This is to insure that the animals are not disturbed and also to insure that people do not inadvertently endanger themselves due to the intolerance of grizzly bears.

Grizzlies are highly protective of their meat food resources and view anything whether ravens, magpies, wolves, foxes, coyotes or......people as competitors for them. They do not differentiate and this is one of the most dangerous situations anyone could find themselves in.

After feeding, it is common for the bears to partially/completely bury the carcass and rest on top of or adjacent to it. Sometimes, they will come and go; consequently if you ever saw a partially buried carcass in the backcountry, you would never want to go near it........as grizz might be on its way back to the carcass at that same time.
