On the fifteenth of February, 1899 — eleven months after the ice closed behind them — the Belgica freed itself. The men had cut a five-week channel through the ice with picks and dynamite.
Adrien de Gerlache wrote, on the morning his ship reached open water, what may be the single least convincing sentence in the entire history of polar exploration.
"Today we are saved. The expedition has been a triumph."
He was, in one of those statements, technically correct.
