Anatol Lieven on American Nationalism and American Culture
Anatol Lieven, DOC RI expert, Professor at Georgetown University in Qatar, talks to DOC TV about American nationalism and American culture, Trump’s foreign policy, and national identities within supranational constructs.
He looks at conflicting concepts of American nationalism today. On the one hand he notes the idea of America as a country that sees itself as open to all who embrace its values, duty bound to spread those values internationally – including through the use of force. On the other, he notes a more contained understanding of what America means and what it is to be American.
He notes that a similar evolution of two contrasting concepts of nationalism can be seen elsewhere – giving examples of France and India.
He argues that the idea of “the West” as a cultural unity is vastly weakened compared to a number of years ago – European identity and interests are very different from those of America.
