Google Home Hub vs Amazon Echo Show 8

In this video I am going to compare the amazon echo show 8 with the google nest hub to help you decide which device is best for you.

I will look at the screens, sound quality, smart assistants and other key features. To help give you an informed decision.

Both devices have similar size screens, with a 7 inch screen on the nest hub and slightly larger 8 inch screen on the echo show.
Both the screens have adaptive brightness controls that will dim or brighten the screens depending on ambient lighting levels. This feature is fantastic if you have one of these devices in the bedroom as light from the screen doesn’t stop you from having a good nights sleep.
The nest hub takes this one step further in that it will also change the colour temperature of the screen to match the lighting in the room.
Both displays are really sharp and look great. But in my opinion the display on the nest hub is slightly better. If you look at your pictures on the screen they actually look like they could be a photograph.
Both displays work as a touch screen so you don’t have to use your voice to control them. Both of them work as expected, but the nest hub is the most responsive of the 2. There is a definite lag when using the touch screen on the echo show, it works fine but it feels a bit like using a 5 year old smart phone.

When it comes to sound the echo show is the superior of the 2. I will play the same sound clip on both devices at 60% volume so you can get an idea of the difference.

The nest hub sounds fine but nothing special, and while the echo show isn’t quite room filling I am more than happy to listen to it for extended periods of time.

Both smart displays have Bluetooth so you can play any music you like through your phone. However there is a difference in the services you can listen too through both. Both will let you stream from Spotify, whereas google play music will work through the nest hub, and both amazon and amazon music work through the echo.

One major difference between the devices is camera on the echo show. When google launched the nest hub, or google home hub as it was known at the time it launched without a camera and was touted as a feature for the security conscious. The idea was that you might want to put it in your bedroom and you don’t want a camera pointing at you.

The echo show negates this by having a manual shutter so you can physically cover the camera.

The camera is really handy as it allows you to video chat with other echo shows, anyone with the alexa app, and even through skype. None of this is possible on the nest hub.

The echo show and nest hub can both be used for viewing video feeds, however, both will work with different devices. For example, the ring cameras and doorbells with only work with the echo devices and nest cameras and doorbells will work with the nest hub.

If someone rings by ring doorbell, the echo show will alert me that someone is at the front door, and I can ask to see the feed. It will also let me talk to the person at the door. Whereas if you have a nest doorbell the nest hub will alert you and show you the feed without you having to ask. This makes a lot more sense to me and I don’t understand why amazon cant enable this feature between ring and the show.

Both smart assistants are great, although I find they are better at certain tasks than others. The echo has been in exitance for some time now and its smart home control is brilliant. While google and the nest hub are catching up, amazon and alexa are better at controlling my devices.

On the other hand the nest hub is much better at answering questions. I guess it would as google bread and butter is search. If I ever need to check a fact I will always ask the google assistant before asking alexa.

Where both devices shine compared to their non screen equivalents is that they also show you the answer to any questions or commands on the display. This is great if you want to double check the answer or write it down.

Something else you might want to use your smart display for is watching content. One important fact to note is that Netflix won’t work on either device.

You can watch youtube on both although it feels a bit clunky on the show.

You can watch prime video on the show as well as some tv services depending on your location. One big plus the nest hub has on its side is the ability to cast.

So what device is best?

For me it really depends. You need to consider if you are already in either echo system, what music services you subscribe too and any smart devices you already own.
