TURBOFURNACE: SUDDEN DEATH

The main goal for this run was to test out the throttling mechanism, and I'm pleased to report that it worked flawlessly. It was easy to make fine adjustments to the throttle and it happily closed itself when I let go of the throttle handle. I had it hovering around 8 PSI for most of the run (although sadly we didn't get video of the pressure gauge.)

I wonder if the boost pressure would have went down if it had run for longer. I also wonder if having some distance from the machine, and wearing hearing protection as well, might have given me confidence to run it faster than I did in the last video, possibly leading to its untimely demise.

Overall it was a blast to play with this thing.

We obviously had a failure of the turbine wheel. Not sure exactly what happened here. At first we thought maybe we seized a bearing, but we had good oil pressure the whole time, and it easily spun again even while hot. Also, seized turbos tend to stop almost instantly, this one kind of spun down over almost half of a second.

The second theory is that it might have ate a piece of charred wood and shredded itself on that. The third is just that the turbo wheel got much hotter, much faster than the housing and it simply expanded until it was in contact with the housing. Either of the latter might explain the high pitched grinding noise in the last 10 seconds before it gave up.

Needless to say, I've got another identical turbo on order from eBay already. I'm excited to tear this broken one down and see what it looks like on the inside.

Next priorities:

- Some kind of filtering mechanism to prevent the turbo from ingesting fuel. The coolest idea we have is some kind of cyclone filter, but it might suffice to just stuff some kind of cheap steel mesh into the top of the burn chamber.

- Ability to start it off of batteries. I have actually done some experiments on this a couple months back and did actually get it started using a fan from a hand-held vacuum cleaner and brushless motor from a remote control airplane, but it took forever and when I accidentally killed it there wasn't enough juice left over in the lead acid batteries to
start it again. Sadly, no video of that.

- Finally, and perhaps most importantly, some kind of load or back pressure. Right now it looks like I'm going to be making a kind of combination nozzle and water tube steam boiler.

As always, we'll see what happens…
