Battle of Okinawa | USS Battleships Under Attack | WW2 Pacific War History

The Battle of Okinawa (April–June 1945) was the largest amphibious assault of the Pacific War and one of the most intense naval-air battles in history. Following earlier turning points such as the Battle of Midway, Okinawa became the final and bloodiest stage of the Pacific campaign.

As U.S. Navy fleets closed in on Okinawa, waves of Japanese aircraft, including Kamikaze, launched attacks against American battleships and carriers.

Between 6 April and 22 June, the Japanese flew 1,465 kamikaze aircraft in large-scale attacks from Kyushu, 185 individual kamikaze sorties from Kyushu, and 250 individual kamikaze sorties from Taiwan, then called Formosa. While US intelligence estimated there were 89 planes on Formosa, the Japanese actually had about 700, dismantled or well camouflaged and dispersed into scattered villages and towns; the US Fifth Air Force disputed Navy claims of kamikaze coming from Formosa.

During these deadly assaults, battleships such as USS Missouri (BB-63), USS Maryland (BB-46), and USS Tennessee (BB-43) were struck by Kamikaze planes and bombs, while aircraft carriers such as USS Enterprise (CV-6), USS Bunker Hill (CV-17), and USS Franklin (CV-13), along with several destroyers, suffered heavy damage. Despite the devastating losses, the U.S. Navy’s anti-aircraft defenses and carrier-based fighters eventually repelled the onslaught.

The skies over Okinawa were filled with tracer fire, explosions, and smoke as American sailors fought to survive one of the fiercest air-sea battles of World War II. It was the final chapter of the Pacific War. WWII Pacific War historical footage documentary.
