Jonathan Frid - The First Sympathetic Vampire

Jonathan Frid's archetypal vampire character, Barnabas Collins, has been described as the "reluctant vampire," "vulnerable vampire," and "sympathetic vampire." He is the first vampire with a conscience, the first to experience inner conflict and self-loathing about his condition and his consequent actions, a vampire with a tortured soul, with a heart that is more human than monstrous.

"O'er mine own misery and thy vain revenge.—

Scorn and despair,—these are mine empire:—"

From "Prometheus Unbound" by Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792--1822)
