In this travel vlog, I prepare to leave Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, home for 3 months to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the nation's capital. In the short time I had in Addis Ababa, I was able to explore around the city and feel the big city vibes, which contrasts the energy in Bahir Dar. I really wish that I had more time in Addis Ababa to explore more of the sights and local attractions!

I also film all the things that I eat during this journey. Watch What I eat in a day while travelling as a vegan!! I have been vegan for almost 2.5 years, and I found that eating as a vegan in Ethiopia is extremely easy. The dominant religion in Ethiopia is Orthodox Christian. Ethiopians commit to “fasting” for a significant part of the year where they eat completely plant-based or “yetsom”. Because of this, you can almost always find fasting or vegan food in restaurants and cafes.

In this video, I had full, coffee, shiro wot, salad and injera. Shiro wot is a chickpea stew and is really flavourful. You eat most dishes in Ethiopia with injera, which is the staple food. Injera is a sour, spongy flatbread pancake hybrid. With your hands, your rip a section of injera which you then use to pick up food. It took me a while to get used to eating with my hands, but by the end of my trip I actually ended up really enjoying it.

Ethiopian food is very tasty and it’s often filled with spices. If you do not like spicy food, make sure to stay away from berbere, which is the green pepper that is in a lot of the dishes.

This is a standard meal for me when I lived in Ethiopia. It is extremely filling!! I would say though that injera for every meal every day might be tough for some. For instance for me, I opt for pasta or pizza from time to time.

There are many options getting around in Addis Ababa. There are minibuses, taxis and the train. Minibuses are more difficult to figure out so I opted out to take the train for the most part. I would advise to only use taxis using the Ride app which I show during this video in order to get a fairly decent price for your journeys. Like a lot of places, taxi drivers will quote you a really high price to get to destinations.

This is my last video filmed in Ethiopia, but I'm hoping to release a video summarizing my time in Ethiopia for 3 months. Spoiler alert: I had an incredible time exploring Bahir Dar, Addis Ababa, Gondar/Gonder, and the Simien Mountains.
