The Photograph That Lied | Gauge #America250

The most famous photograph in American military history isn't what you think it is. Joe Rosenthal's iconic image of six men raising the flag on Iwo Jima captured a replacement flag -- not the first flag raised under combat fire hours earlier.

A colonel wanted the original flag as a souvenir. So a second, larger flag went up, and Rosenthal caught it in one-four-hundredth of a second. He didn't even know if he'd gotten the shot. Within days it was on every front page in America. It sold millions in war bonds. It became the Marine Corps War Memorial.

Three of the six men in that photograph were dead within weeks. The survivors were pulled from combat for a bond tour -- heroes for a moment they didn't consider heroic.
