1 Kings 18 contains one of the most dramatic confrontations in the entire Bible. After three years of devastating drought, the prophet Elijah finally steps out of hiding and challenges King Ahab, the prophets of Baal, and the entire nation of Israel.

The chapter begins with famine crushing the land while Ahab desperately searches for water. Elijah then meets Obadiah, the faithful servant who secretly protected one hundred prophets of the Lord from Queen Jezebel.

Soon afterward, Elijah confronts Ahab directly and declares that the real cause of Israel’s suffering is not the prophet — but the king’s idolatry.

Then comes the unforgettable showdown on Mount Carmel.

Elijah gathers the people and challenges the prophets of Baal to a public test. Two altars are prepared, and the God who answers by fire will be revealed as the true God. The prophets of Baal cry out all day with no response, while Elijah calmly repairs the altar of the Lord, drenches it with water, and prays.

Then fire falls from heaven.

The people finally cry out, “The Lord, He is God!” and the prophets of Baal are defeated. Afterward, Elijah prays persistently until a tiny cloud appears over the sea, bringing the long-awaited rain back to Israel.
