📝 Step-by-Step Guide: How to Track Form Submissions & Phone Call Clicks in GA4
=========================
🎯 Goal:
Track when someone fills out a form or clicks a phone number on your website using Google Analytics 4.
✅ Step 1: Set Up GA4 on Your Website
If you haven’t done this yet:
1. Go to https://analytics.google.com
2. Create a GA4 property.
3. Add the Google Tag to your site (via your website builder, Google Tag Manager, or directly in your website's code).
✅ Step 2: Use Google Tag Manager (GTM)
To track custom events (like form submits or phone clicks), it’s easiest to use GTM.
If you don’t have GTM:
1. Go to https://tagmanager.google.com
2. Set up a new container for your website.
3. Add the GTM code to your website (replace the GA4 tag if needed).
✅ Step 3: Track Phone Clicks
1. In GTM, click “Triggers” → New
2. Name it: Phone Click
3. Choose Click – Just Links as the trigger type
4. Under “Enable trigger on”, select All Pages
5. Set the trigger condition:
Click URL → contains → tel:
👉 This tracks when someone clicks a phone link (tel:).
6. Now go to Tags → New
7. Choose Google Analytics: GA4 Event
8. Choose your GA4 configuration tag
9. Name the Event: phone_click
10. Attach your Phone Click trigger
11. Save and Publish in GTM
✅ Step 4: Track Form Submissions
1. Create a new Trigger in GTM
2. Use the trigger type: Form Submission
3. Check the box “Wait for tags” and set a 2,000ms timeout
4. Set it to fire on: Some Forms
Example condition:
Form ID → equals → contact-form
(You’ll need to inspect your site or ask your dev for the form ID/class)
5. Now go to Tags → New
6. Choose GA4 Event
7. Name the event: form_submit
8. Attach your form submission trigger
9 Save and Publish
✅ Step 5: Mark Events as Conversions in GA4
1. Go to analytics.google.com
2. Click Admin → Events
3. Look for your new events (phone_click, form_submit)
4. Click “Mark as conversion” next to each
Now GA4 will count each form submission or phone click as a conversion!
🧠 Bonus Tips:
• Use Preview mode in GTM to test everything before publishing
• Events may take 24 hours to show in GA4
• You can use DebugView in GA4 to see real-time testing
