How to remove the sticky stuff from steering wheel?

why spend money on detailing the surface of steering wheel when it starts to turn sticky. I tried using cloth with some household products like the vinegar/ baking soda concoction on a small part. was not successful and I hated the smell. it stinks and fibers of rag came off because of the sticky wheel.
