ICD vs DSM-5 Frameworks

The International Classification of Diseases ("ICD") is a global manual maintained by the World Health Organization that contains approximately 800 mental disorders. In contrast, the DSM-5 only contains about 157 disorders, making it essentially an "American version" or a small subset of the much larger ICD system.

When it comes to diagnostic codes, the American Psychiatric Association ("APA") did not actually invent the numbers used in the DSM-V; those numbers are pulled directly from the ICD!

This explainer describes to the first year residents how DSM-5 integrates these codes and versions.

Topics discussed:

The Dual Coding System, Future Alignment, and the Clinical "Loophole". I must points out a highly practical detail for clinicians unhappy with the DSM-V's changes. Because the DSM-5 is merely a subset of the ICD, a diagnosis being dropped from the DSM does not mean it ceased to exist in the global system.

There will be other implementations, in theory for Acupuncturists ("DOM") and other fields. This will form the part of a large series of explainers for issues surrounding the DSM-5 and the DSM's in general and the ICD, diagnostic codes.
