This” How to make eyelet curtains” shows how to make these curtains using an eyelet curtain heading tape. This method of making this style of curtain is easy using the tape as the eyelets will be already evenly spaced along the tape.

First you will need to make the basic curtains by following the videos How To Make Curtains part 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edeyWeBPzik and part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzrHstBcqXQ

When you have made the basic curtains, it is time to choose your style of curtain heading. The most popular types of curtain finishes are pencil pleat, pinch pleat and eyelet curtains.

EYELET CURTAINS.
Eyelet curtains make a perfect window treatment for the modern home, but cannot be fitted to curtain tracks and can only be fitted in bay windows if the curtains are fitted to individual curtain poles fitted to the flat sections of the bay as the eyelets cannot pass over the bay window corner joints or brackets. The eyelets of the curtains fit directly to the curtain pole, unlike most other types of curtains which fit to the curtain pole rings. The eyelet rings are available in various metallic finishes, so for a professional finish, make sure the colour of the rings match the colour of the curtain pole.

PENCIL PLEAT CURTAINS.
This is still the most popular style of curtains and the easiest to make. The curtains are finished using a wide tape that has 3 rows of cord threaded through it. Once the pencil pleat heading is attached to the curtains, they are gathered by pulling the cords of the heading tape equally to the required width. The finish of the heading should look like a row of uniform, evenly spaced pleats. These curtains can be fitted to both Wooden or Metal Curtain Poles http://www.polesandblinds.com/curtain-poles/ or Curtain Tracks http://www.polesandblinds.com/curtain-tracks/
These curtains can be used for standard and bay windows.

PINCH PLEAT CURTAINS.
Pinch pleat curtains are very elegant and give a more traditional finish. The heading is formed by groups of pleats, normally 2 or 3 pleats to a group, with flat sections of heading between each group of pleats. They can be made using a pinch pleat heading tape or with the pinch pleats being made by hand as shown in our video......You will need to accurately measure the width of your windows before you make the pinch pleats because unlike a pencil pleat heading which is adjustable, pinch pleats are fixed once they are made.

HOW TO MEASURE FOR EYELET CURTAINS.

Please see our GUIDES on measuring for curtain poles http://www.polesandblinds.com/curtain-poles/guides/

To decide on the width of the eyelet curtains and curtain pole.

1. First measure the width of the window opening.
2. Decide how much you would like your curtains to extend either side of the window opening. Eyelet curtains in particular look better if they are allowed to pleat naturally when they are open in their folds, but ideally will need adequate space on the wall to accommodate the folds.
3. A standard overlap on the wall for a pair of eyelet curtains with a single width of fabric will be approx. 20cm.
4. If you have a large window opening or your curtains are heavy or interlined, you will need to allow more space either side of the window to allow the curtains to hang in their pleats.
5. When you are measuring for the curtain pole, do not include the finials in your measurements, but make sure there will be adequate space for the finials before you choose your eyelet pole. The finial lengths are shown in the specifications of the pole on the site.
6. When you are working out the quantity of fabric you will need for your curtains, you will need to take into account the amount you want your curtains to pleat across the window then the curtains are closed. Normally for eyelet curtains each curtain would ideally be up to the whole width of the track.

To decide on the drop of the eyelet curtains and where to fit the curtain pole.

1. Eyelet curtain poles are normally fitted 5-10cms above the window opening.
2. Full length curtains normally finish 1cm above the floor or short curtains .5cm above the window sill.
3. Curtains that finish below the window sill finish normally 12cm below the sill.
4. Once you have decided on the finished length of your curtains (including the upstand of the curtain above the curtain pole of 3.5cm), add 20cm to allow for turnings and hems.
