Ralph Fiennes becomes the dagger in Macbeth speech

Is this dagger a delusion in an otherwise fully aware mind? Conjured by Ralph Fiennes’s shifty Macbeth to spur himself on to murder an innocent man and seize his crown.

Throughout the play Fiennes adopts a peculiar hunched posture as if he's already anticipating the weight of the crown on his head.

In this scene, you can notice that the character begins to resemble a dagger itself, specifically the small dagger that he carries in his back pocket. A cowardly weapon designed to be concealed and tucked away immediately after the killing strike. His gestures are pointed, yet he curls into himself, angling his face downward while extending his limbs like blades.

It looks like he's becoming the very dagger he hallucinates.

Do you see any acting decisions in his performance that seem strange or interesting? Let us know in the comments!

This staging of the 2024 production of Macbeth at London's Dock X is from director Simon Godwin with Indira Varma as Lady Macbeth, and you can watch it in full on Marquee TV.
