Special effects expert, Dudman, explains how they had to build a new Aragog for the film because the previous one had died. Although the new Aragog is essentially the same character, they upgraded him by using solid polyurethane instead of latex and Polyfoam. This produced a translucent quality that allowed the under-structure to be seen through the surface, giving it a dead insect-like appearance. he team spent weeks doing hair and building a very strong, heavy version that weighed three-quarters of a ton, which Hagrid had to push in the film. This was necessary to make it move like something that heavy would move. In the end, the result was very successful and provided something for the actors to interact with, which is often necessary for their performances.
