Cultural development is a historical process. Our ancestors learnt many things from their predecessors. With the passage of time they also added to it from their own experience and gave up those which they did not consider useful. This is how culture is transmitted and carried forward from generation to next generation. The culture we inherit from our predecessors is called our cultural heritage. Cultural Heritage can be distinguished in 3 parts  
• Built Environment (Buildings, Townscapes, Archaeological remains)
• Natural Environment (Rural landscapes, Coasts and shorelines,  Agricultural heritage)
• Artefacts (Books & Documents, Objects, Pictures)
Cultural Heritage can be of two more types 1) tangible 2) Intangible

सांस्कृतिक विकास एक ऐतिहासिक प्रक्रिया है। हम अपने पूर्वजों से कुछ सीखते है और उन्होंने अपने पूर्वजों से कुछ सीखकर उसमें नए विचार, नई भावनाएँ जोड़ी होंगी और इसी प्रकार कुछ अनावश्यक चीज़ों को छोड़ा भी होगा| इस तरह कुछ नए विचारों और नवाचार के साथ संस्कृति एक पीढ़ी से दूसरी पीढ़ी में हस्तांतरित होती रहती है| जो संस्कृति हम अपने पूर्वजों से प्राप्त करते है उसे सांस्कृतिक विरासत कहते है| सांस्कृतिक विरासत को मुख्य रूप से तीन भागों में बांटकर देखा जा सकता है| पहला BUILT HERITAGE; जैसे- इमारतें, स्थापत्य कला आदि दूसरा नेचुरल एनवायरनमेंट; जैसे- ग्रामीण लैंडस्केप, कॉस्ट और शोरलाइन्स आदि और तीसरा कलाकृतियों से संबंधित सांस्कृतिक विरासत; जैसे- किताबें, दस्तावेज़, चित्रकला आदि| इसके अलावा इसे मूर्त, अमूर्त में बांटकर समझा जा सकता है|
