This is a summary of my theory on why New Generation is the way it’s is instead of how it canonically should be lining up with FIM lore

Basically Twilight was so affected by her friends passing that she failed to rule as well as when they were still there. In turn she failed to keep the magic of friendship alive, too wrapped in her own grief to deal with her subject’s friendships, teach it to her students or make new friends. Making new friends was already hard because of her role as Princess. Slowly the windigos emerged aging and upon seeing them Twilight was able to pick herself up enough to do one last world-saving mission.
She worked on her magic and a spell that would not fix to the lack of friendship but would ensure that from then on, no amount of disagreement would cause the windigos to return and banish them forever, along with herself.
