20 Years Since Mayor Newsom Started Same Sex Marriages in California
In 2004, then San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom defied the law & started issuing same sex marriage licenses.
Backlash to that action led to California voters passing Proposition 8, which defined marriage as between a man and woman in the Golden State.
The documentary "Pursuit of Happiness" profiles the history making experience.
Newsom's brother-in-law Geoff Callan directed.
Callan's wife & Newsom's sister, Hillary Newsom Callan, produced.
For the 20th anniversary of the first marriages, they are hosting screenings of the film around the state...including at USC.
