Vintage Contax Zeiss photography lens and The Modern Zeiss Cp3 Cinema Lens
Vintage Contax Zeiss Lenses vs. Modern Zeiss Cinema Glass – A Lens Comparison
In this video, we take a quick but insightful look at vintage Contax Zeiss photo lenses and how they compare to modern Zeiss cinema glass. Many filmmakers and video shooters love using old Zeiss Contax lenses for video, so we explore some of the key differences, pros, and cons of these legendary lenses.
Why Are Contax Zeiss Lenses So Popular for Video?
Contax Zeiss lenses were originally designed for 35mm still photography, but their sharp optics, smooth focus throw, and beautiful rendering have made them highly sought after in modern cinema and video production. Compared to today’s Zeiss cinema glass, these vintage lenses offer a unique character and affordability, making them a great choice for indie filmmakers, documentary shooters, and content creators.
Comparing Three 35mm Lenses in This Video
For this test, the three main talking segments were shot using three different 35mm lenses:
• Zeiss 35mm T2.1 Cinema Lens
• Contax Zeiss 35mm Photo Lens
• A Mystery 35mm Lens… (Not in that order!)
One of the interesting takeaways is how similar all three lenses look in terms of color reproduction. With each lens set to the same F-stop (or T-stop… ish) and focused on the same point, the overall consistency is impressive.
The only adjustment made was a slight white balance tweak on one lens, as it ran a bit warm. Aside from that, only a LUT and a touch of grain were added in post-production.
What’s Coming in Future Videos?
This video is just the first step in a more detailed lens comparison series. In upcoming videos, we’ll dive deeper into:
🔹 Focus Breathing – How much does each lens “breathe” when racking focus?
🔹 Color Matching – Do the vintage and modern Zeiss lenses match perfectly, or are there subtle differences?
🔹 Bokeh & Lens Flares – How does each lens handle background blur and flare characteristics?
Final Thoughts
Vintage Contax Zeiss lenses offer an incredible price-to-performance ratio, but how do they hold up against dedicated cinema glass? This comparison provides a real-world look at how they perform side by side.
