Program Notes:
Etude 10 "Giga" from Violin Partita no. 2 by J.S. Bach arranged by Marcel Grandjany: This is Grandjany's harp arrangement of "Giga" from Bach's Violin Partita no. 2. The consistent tempo and continuous melody bring out the musical elements of the Giga (jig) with some more modern harp techniques added to bring out the harp's abilities.
Suite Magica: (Magic Suite) is based off four Argentine dance forms, Preludio, Vals, Tango and Candombe. The guitar and harp present the suite in an even, balanced conversational style, using dance styles and beautiful, romantic interludes.
Birds in winter: Six Preludes for Harp: Michael Mauldin composed this after watching the birds outside his window reacting to the oncoming winter. He thought of the emotional reactions they may have, which is especially prevalent in the last movement.
The Lark: Mikhail Glinka's composition of The Lark was part of his compilation of songs titled, "A Farewell to Saint Petersburg". The Lark was inspired by the poem of the same name, written by Glinka's good friend and poet, Nestor Kukolnik. The Lark sings a solemn song for a love that has been lost with a glimmer of hope that love will bring them together again.
Aria in Classic Style: Grandjany originally wrote this for harp soloist and organ as he was an organist as well as a harpist. He dedicated it to Mrs. Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, the founder of the music division of the Library of Congress. The harp is soloistic without being extremely exuberant, and the accompaniment compliments it while standing out by itself in its own way.
Fantaisie on a Theme from Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin": This was composed by Catherine Walter-Khune meant to highlight the waltz theme from the second act of Tchaikovsky's opera, "Eugene Onegin" with a slow intro, main waltz, slow, romantic theme and grand finale.
