Overall Impression:

After a fantastic AA flight from LAX to HND and a brief stay in Tokyo, we eagerly anticipated experiencing the Narita to Dallas route and comparing it to our outbound flight. Despite fewer amenities being provided on this flight, we were fortunate enough to be accompanied by an outstanding crew. Additionally, the 787-9's Super Diamond seats surpassed the Zodiac Concept D seats we had on our outbound flight. The catering out of Narita was also a considerable improvement over the previous flight. Furthermore, the JAL First Class Lounge in Narita, which is, without a doubt, my favorite lounge in Tokyo, was exceptional.

What I Liked:

The JAL First Class Lounge in Narita - Thanks to our Oneworld Emerald status, we had the pleasure of visiting the JAL First Class Lounge at Narita Airport. The JAL Salon on the main floor was a peaceful retreat with a variety of lounge options, including a smoking room and shower suites. Upstairs, the dining room provided a top-notch experience with made-to-order food and beverages available via the JAL Lounge smartphone app. The quality of the cuisine was exceptional and really added to the overall enjoyment of our lounge experience.

The friendly service - We had the pleasure of interacting with an incredibly friendly and engaging crew on this flight. Trish, who served our side of the cabin (and also acted as purser), was particularly charming and clearly takes pride in her work. In fact, she went above and beyond by leaving us a handwritten note expressing her gratitude for our business. Throughout the flight, the crew remained attentive, offering drink refills proactively and checking in with us periodically to ensure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. he crew even setup a makeshift fireplace in-front of the cabin, was a unique touch that added to the cozy atmosphere. Overall, their excellent service made the flight a truly enjoyable experience.

What I didn't Like:

The Amenities - Business class passengers on this flight are provided with a range of amenities, including a Shinola amenity kit, bottled water, slippers, and B&O noise-canceling headphones. The airline also provides a pillow and duvet set for a comfortable in-flight rest. However, it is worth noting that unlike our previous AA flight on the LAX-HND route, this flight did not offer pajamas or mattress pads in business class.
It was OK, I guess...

The Catering - The in-flight catering out of Narita was quite impressive. While the presentation of the meals may not have quite matched up to what you'd find on Asian and Middle Eastern airlines, the food itself was fresh and flavorful. The Japanese Meal I had pre-ordered was both visually appealing and delicious, and my companion enjoyed the macadamia crusted sea bass (though it was slightly overcooked). We were both pleasantly surprised by how tasty the yakisoba was for our pre-arrival meal. And of course, as always, the ice cream Sundae for dessert was a standout highlight of the in-flight food offerings.

The Seats - AA's 787-9 Dreamliners come equipped with Super Diamond Seats in an all-forward-facing 1-2-1 configuration (without doors). These seats felt wonderfully private and, for the most part, very comfortable for dining, lounging, and sleeping. The personal air nozzles were a nice touch, and while I did hit my knee on the pull-out table a few times while asleep, this was a minor issue. Overall, the seat design was a great choice for this flight, and added to the overall sense of comfort and privacy during our journey.

The IFE - Regarding the in-flight entertainment, I believe that AA has one of the most remarkable systems in the industry. Its intuitive and responsive interface facilitates quick and easy access to the vast array of movies, TV shows, music, and games available during the flight. The Panasonic 3D moving map stood out to me as a particular highlight of the system. Despite the relatively expensive WiFi internet option ($30 for the entire flight), the IFE was an excellent way to make the flight more enjoyable and pass the time more quickly.

Bottom Line:

As frequent flyers with AA, we have had our fair share of both good and not-so-good flights with the airline. However, on this flight from Narita to Dallas, the exceptional crew made all the difference. Trish, one of the flight attendants, was truly one of a kind, and along with the rest of the crew, was attentive, engaging, and went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and enjoyment throughout the journey. While the food was only decent, the comfortable seats allowed for a good night's sleep.
