Episode 27 of AOT the final season was called Retrospective.

Episode 27 begins Daz’s lifeless body descending deeper into the water and the two scouts take a second here to reflect on what they just had to do. Connie was one of the people who was most vocal about not wanting to resort to violence, so to end the lives of two friends is something that’s likely gonna haunt him regardless of how this all ends. After some brief shots of Annie and Reiner smacking down more Yeagerists, the anime then moves down to the basement where the alliance encounters their next big obstacle. As we already know the Azumabito mechanics are the only ones who can prepare the flying boat for take off and in this scene, they reveal it would take them half a day to get it ready. This creates 2 major problems, with the first being that it’s impossible to defend the flying boat for that long. Considering that the enemy can endlessly send wave after wave of reinforcements, there’s no way this small group of people can protect the plane and the mechanics for half a day. Additionally the power of the Female and Armored titans only lasts for a few hours, so if the alliance stays here they’d eventually get overwhelmed by the yeagerists. The 2nd problem is that even if they somehow manage to do everything right, it would still be too late to save Liberio. In the last episode Hange confirmed that the rumbling was on the Marlyean continent and in half a day, the titans would be able to keep marching for hundreds of miles. This means that no matter what happens there’s a 0% chance they’ll be able to stop Liberio from getting trampled and this causes Jean to flashback to one of the good times they had there. It’s no secret that the scouts spend months living in Marley during the timeskip between seasons 3 and 4 and this memory is from a time when they got drunk with some refugees living on the continent. With Liberio being destroyed, he realises that all the nice people he met are gonna be trampled which obviously isn’t something he wanted to happen. That being said, Kiyomi comes up with a plan that would at least give them hope of saving innocent people in other cities and this plan involves preparing the flying boat somewhere else. We’ve already established how the situation on Paradis is way too chaotic for them to do it here, but on the continent, the azumabito have a hangar where the plane can be serviced. In the basement she shows them a map of the Marley and based on the hangars location, it should be possible for the alliance to get there pretty quickly and take the flying boat with them. Using this ship to get them there the mechanics would then have time to get everything ready without waves of yeagerists trying to kill them. However, Kiyomi’s plan does also come with a massive risk because the place they’re going to is set to be trampled by the rumbling, just like every other Marlyean city. Although they’ll be able to reach the hanger before any titans get there, there’s no guarantee the mechanics will finish preparing the plane before the rumbling arrives to squash them. Either way it’s still the best choice they have right now and so the alliance sets the plan in motion by telling the others what’s happening.

In Annie’s case her MAIN motivation for stopping the rumbling was to save her dad and so when Mikasa tells her the new plan she begins to wonder what that means for Liberio. At this stage she had no idea that saving Liberio was impossible and as a result she continues to help out by defending the azumabito. In this scene Kiyomi and the mechanics exit the basement so they can run towards the ship, while Hange, Mikasa and the warriors do whatever they can to keep them alive. As the yeagerists continue to fire the armoured titan reaches over to offer some protection but in the process he exposes himself to direct attacks from thunderspears. Up till this point he and Annie had done pretty well to avoid taking any damage from these things but in the current situation they had no option but to put their bodies on the line and essentially become human shields.
